While the coffee table may seem like it has always been a part of home decor they actually did not come into use in the American home until the 1920s. While coffee lovers in England was active in coming up with furniture pieces to facilitate a coffee shop type atmosphere their solution was a table that still stood at about 27 inches tall. The much shorter coffee table height of 18-20 inches which has now become standard came into play when the prohibition of the 1920s changed the focus of the home entertainment scene.
When you look at the different styles of coffee tables that you can choose from you should be aware of what your personal style and decor is. If you have a modern or contemporary style then you need to find a table with brighter colors that was constructed from industrial metals such as aluminum or even a plastic base. A more modern table will also feature glass or industrial metal table tops. But if you have a more traditional and classic style then you should find coffee tables that are made with darker hardwoods and feature tops made out of marble glass or wood.
